Combined Driving
Combined driving, the original concept credited to HRH Prince Phillip and patterned after three-day eventing, tests a driver's ability and horse(s)' athleticism, obedience, strength and speed in three demanding phases: Driven Dressage, Marathon, and Cones. Competitors can drive a turnout of a single, a pair, or a team of four horses—or ponies—and the competitor with the fewest overall penalty points accumulated in an event places first. Dressage
The Olympic sport of dressage is derived from the French term meaning "training;” its purpose is to develop obedience, flexibility, and balance in the horse. The Morgan’s willing personality, intelligence, inherent physical soundness, and athleticism have made it an ideal dressage horse, and it is competitive against all breeds at all levels in the sport—up to and including Grand Prix. The breed has a long history of local and regional success, consistently earns scores that would rank in the top ten, often top five, in many of the Adequan®/USDF All-Breed standings in the Warmblood divisions, is a strong presence at the National Dressage Pony Cup, and competitive at the US Dressage Finals. Endurance/Competitive Trail
The goal of Endurance is to complete the course in the least amount of time with a horse in the best physical condition possible, and the Morgan breed has a long history of meeting this goal. In 1919, the government-bred Morgan, Castor placed second in a 300-mile test carrying 225 lbs, and a part-Morgan (“Buffalo Bill”) took part in the first Tevis Cup in 1955. Morgans and part-Morgans are continue to be a consistent presence in year-end award standings, and serious competitors in endurance (and the related event of competitive trail riding) competitions across the country—including the Tevis Cup. Eventing
Made an Olympic sport in 1912, Eventing’s initial purpose was to test horses on their fitness and suitability for use in the cavalry. Morgans have long been selected for the same stamina, trainability that made them sought-after cavalry mounts in the American Civil War. Today, Morgans and part-Morgans continue to demonstrate their suitability for the sport and have competed at some of the highest levels in Eventing including the North American Young Riders Championships, CN North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, the Pan American Games, Rolex, and World Championships. Western Dressage
Western Dressage integrates the fundamentals of dressage with the best of Western Stock horse tradition. To be successful in the sport, a horse must exhibit impulsion, balance, obedience, and flexibility—all traits that come naturally to the Morgan horse. As with traditional dressage, Western dressage competition is based on levels—Introductory, Basic, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4—that increase in difficulty as training progresses. Morgans continue to be successful competitors in the sport, consistently earning high scores and championships at the Western Dressage Association of America Championship show, and impressive year-end rankings against all breeds in the USEF National Point standings. Western Working
The Western Working disciplines showcases the skills needed by horses and riders in order to handle livestock and other ranch work: cutting, team penning, reining, working cow house, and related events. During the 1800’s and early 1900s, Morgans were an integral part of the development of the West as they were used for ranch and vaquero work, as well as in the establishment of many stock horse breed—including the Quarter Horse. Many Morgans are still used on ranches where smart, strong, and catty horses are essential and Western Working disciplines showcase these talents in the competition arena. Working Equitation
Working Equitation is an international sport, pioneered in Italy, Portugal, Spain and France, and is rapidly growing in popularity in the United States. The discipline was created to promote types of equitation used when working on farms, ranches and with livestock. Horses can be ridden English or Western and competitions consist of four distinct phases: Working Dressage, Ease of Handling with Obstacles, Speed Obstacles, and Cattle Handling. Events in the United States offer five levels of increasing difficulty: Introductory, Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Masters, with the Masters level being equivalent to the international standard of the sport.
